Gator Gab – Week at a Glance for Week #9 – Oct. 29-Nov. 2nd, 2018

Below is a peak at some important information items followed by a glance at our week ahead – have a wonderful week Gators!

EQAO 2017-18 RESULTS: WE ARE PROUD OF OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF

The staff and students of Our Lady of Grace Catholic School continue to do their best toward celebrating and demonstrating student learning and we are proud of our student’s success as demonstrated during EQAO testing.  Last year’s Grade 3 and Grade 6 students did their very best and should be commended for their hard work and initiative. Our Lady of Grace School will continue to implement focused and effective learning strategies as part of our yearly School Improvement Planning for Student Achievement (SIPSA).

The percentage of 2017-18 Grade 3 students at or above the provincial standard for the Primary Testing is as follows: Reading: 96%, Writing: 100%, and Mathematics: 88%.  The percentage of Grade 6 students at or above the provincial standard for Junior testing is as follows: Reading: 91%, Writing 91%, and Mathematics: 53%.  The individual student test results from 2017-18 were sent home with the grades 4 and 7 students in early October.  The EQAO test results are an important source of information for us all as we continue to program to meet the needs of each student. A publication is available at www.edu.gov.on.ca. If you are interested in EQAO information, “A Guide for Parents” can be found at www.eqao.com. Again, we are very proud of our students, staff and school community – Congratulations Gators!

Halloween Safety Tips for School

Halloween is fast approaching and is a FUN and memorable time of year for families and our students.

Please DO NOT SEND BAKING TO SCHOOL and NO NUTS with our children’s Halloween Treats too – THANKS!

There is no need to send Halloween treats to school. Please check with your child’s teacher if you plan to do so. Classrooms that participate do a loot bag such that ALL goodies go home for parents to guide the child’s decision making re treats, allergies, etc. We also ask that you be extra careful in checking labels and avoid sending any Halloween treats to school that contain peanuts or nut products.  These items can be enjoyed at home.  As well, note that for both safety and re our honoring our parents wishing to be the decision makers in their child’s eating habits – we can not accept baked goods (i.e. cupcakes, cookies, etc.) sent to your child’s classroom at any time in the school year. Just contact your child’s teacher or the main office if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks for understanding the need for this safety measure!

HALLOWEEN FACTS AND SAFETY TIPS for Trick or Treating

The word “Halloween” translates to “Holy Evening” which originates in our Catholic Tradition as the holy evening before “All Saints Day” on November 1st.  Many of our Catholic Saints were Martyrs and died a tragic death.  Halloween presents many opportunities to discuss our Catholic Traditions heading to the month of November.  With witches, goblins, and super-heroes descending on neighbourhoods across Canada, the Canadian Red Cross offers parents some safety tips to help prepare their children for a safe and enjoyable trick-or-treat holiday.  Halloween should be filled with surprise and enjoyment, and following some common sense practices will make events safer and more fun!

¨ Costumes should be light-coloured and flame resistant with reflective strips so that children are more easily seen at night.  (Remember to put reflective tape on bikes and brooms, too!)

¨ Costumes should be short enough to avoid tripping.

¨ Remind children to keep away from open fires and candles, as costumes can be extremely flammable.

¨ Use face paint rather than masks or things that will cover the eyes.

¨ Remind children to walk, slither, and sneak on sidewalks – not in the street.

¨ Explain to children that calls should be made along one side of the street first and then the other, and that it’s best to cross the street only at intersections or crosswalks.

¨ Visit homes that have a porch light on

¨ Provide yourself or the children with a flashlight to see better and to be better seen.

¨ Have children plan their route and share it with you and the family.

¨ Children should travel in groups of four or five.  Young children should be accompanied by an adult.

¨ Remind children to look both ways before crossing the street to check for cars, trucks and low-flying brooms.

¨ Make sure children know they should accept treats at the door and must not get into cars or enter the homes or apartments of strangers.

¨ Remind children not to eat their treats and goodies until they are examined by an adult at home.  Candy should not be eaten if the package is already opened.

¨ Set agreed-to boundaries with your children.  Explain the importance of staying with them and arriving home on time.

Our Lady of Grace Catholic School “BOOK OF LIFE”

The word Halloween, remembered on October 31st, translates to mean “Holy Evening,” to denote the night before the Feast of All Saints on November 1st.  The Feast of All Souls on November 2nd begins this important time of year.  The month of November affords us a special time to honour the lives of our loved ones who are deceased and revisit our wonderful memories of these family members and friends who now reside with God in Heaven.  We know that their spirit and love is still very much alive in our hearts and often they inspire us to do great things in our lives and for others.

Accordingly, with your assistance, we will work with the students to understand and recall those loved ones who have been welcomed by God above.  Each student will be given an opportunity to record the names of deceased family and friends (if they wish) in our BOOK OF LIFE, so that we may honor them and remember and pray for them, as is our Catholic faith tradition.

Space is provided on the back of this sheet so that you can dialogue with your child to record the names of deceased family members and friends who will be remembered in our classroom/school prayers.  The sheets will then be added to our November Our Lady of Grace Catholic School “BOOK OF LIFE,” which is kept on our front entrance altar prayer centre. Please send the sheet with your prayer requests to your child’s teacher by Friday, November 9th.

Each day in November during morning PA Prayers and Announcements, we will pray for deceased family members from our community noted in our Book of Life.  We appreciate your support as we continue to engage our students in meaningful prayer.
