Oct 30th Kindergarten Trip to Shantz Farm is Cancelled due to Inclement Weather

Trip Cancellation – Kindergarten Trip to Shantz Farm

ATTENTION KINDERGARTEN FAMILIES,

Our sincere apologies but, due to the weather forecast tomorrow, we have decided it is in the best interests of our students to cancel our trip to Shantz Farm.  Many WCDSB events are weather dependent and the well being of our students is first and foremost.  Unfortunately there are no indoor facilities at this trip location.  The Shantz Family ends their farm tour season on November 1st so there is no option to reschedule this fall.  We will be sending home your $11.00 payment tomorrow with your child.

Thank you for your understanding of this matter. We were really looking forward to this trip and are already in the process of planning another one soon.

Gator Gab – Week #9 – Oct. 28 – Nov. 1/19

Gator Gab – Week at a Glance – Week #9 – Oct. 28 – Nov. 1, 2019

Below is a peak at some important information items followed by our Week ahead …

Have a Happy Halloween Gators!

HALLOWEEN FACTS AND SAFETY TIPS

The word “Halloween” translates to “Holy Evening” which originates in our Catholic Tradition as the holy evening before “All Saints Day” on November 1st. Halloween presents many opportunities to discuss our Catholic Traditions heading to the month of November also …

With witches, goblins, and super-heroes descending on neighbourhoods across Canada, the Canadian Red Cross offers parents some safety tips to help prepare their children for a safe and enjoyable trick-or-treat holiday.  Halloween should be filled with fun, surprise and enjoyment and following some common sense practices will make events safer and more fun!

¨ Costumes should be light-coloured and flame resistant with reflective strips so that children are more easily seen at night.  (Remember to put reflective tape on bikes and brooms, too!)

¨ Costumes should be short enough to avoid tripping.

¨ Remind children to keep away from open fires and candles, as costumes can be extremely flammable.

¨ Use face paint rather than masks or things that will cover the eyes.

¨ Remind children to walk, slither, and sneak on sidewalks – not in the street.

¨ Explain to children that calls should be made along one side of the street first and then the other, and that it’s best to cross the street only at intersections or crosswalks.

¨ Visit homes that have a porch light on

¨ Provide yourself or the children with a flashlight to see better and to be better seen.

¨ Have children plan their route and share it with you and the family.

¨ Children should travel in groups of four or five.  Young children should be accompanied by an adult.

¨ Remind children to look both ways before crossing the street to check for cars, trucks and low-flying brooms.

¨ Make sure children know they should accept treats at the door and must not get into cars or enter the homes or apartments of strangers.

¨ Remind children not to eat their treats and goodies until they are examined by an adult at home.  Candy should not be eaten if the package is already opened.

¨ Set agreed-to boundaries with your children.  Explain the importance of staying with them and arriving home on time.

OLOG Loves Umbrellas! Our FOOD DRIVE was a HUGE success and it is so wonderful to help others! Empathy inspired Action!

The new theme for the Umbrella Project for October is Empathy. This is defined as the ability to share and understand the feelings of another. This is an important skill for students to develop. Our Gators learned a great deal more about EMPATHY as we worked together to make a difference for our local SVDP Food Bank at Blessed Sacrament Church – Awesome Effort Gators!

Our We Team motivated the students through a little competition also – the results of kindness are in: In third place, with 186 items – Mr. Sullivan’s Grade 4/5s! In second place, with 222 items – Mrs. Weinstein’s Grade 2s! And in first place, with an astounding 275 items is – Mrs. Da Silva’s Grade 3! Way to go Grade 3s! In total, our school collected 1413 items to help feed families here in our very own community. Thank you for all you’ve done to show empathy, Gators, and keep up the amazing work!

Please see the attached article on how to help your child(ren) develop empathy.

POSSIBLE CUPE STRIKE – Beginning Tomorrow, Mon., Oct. 7th – UPDATE …

Dear Gator Students and Families:

In the event of a CUPE strike on Monday, October 7th, all SCHOOLS in the Waterloo Catholic District School Board will be CLOSED. We keep all involved in our prayers and are hopeful of a resolution as negotiations continue over this weekend. A final announcement about tomorrow will likely occur first thing in the morning (very much like a Snow Cancellation Day). Parents are asked to check their normal media outlets for notification as they would in the event of an inclement weather school closure. We will also try to send something over our Gator Newswire as soon as we know.

Bus cancellations and school closures notices affecting the schools within the Waterloo Catholic District School Board will be given at 6:00 – 6:30 a.m. on Monday morning.

UMBRELLA PROJECT KICKOFF ASSEMBLY – OCTOBER is about EMPATHY

A Big Thank You to Ms. Pagett and Ms. Farrell for sharing their energy and talents to help us kick off Year 1 of our participation in the Umbrella Project. As touched on, we all experience rain in our lives and to understand what skills and traits are needed by our students so that they have a “STRONG UMBRELLA” ready to go when it is needed, will be a special focus for us in the coming months. Thank you teachers, parents and students for sharing your insights about EMPATHY as we develop this Umbrella Trait during the month of OCTOBER – keep up the great LEARNING AND SHARING! Mr. Dinner’s Umbrella was not in good shape (lots of wholes) so when the rain hit, lots of students could “empathize” with Mr. Dinner being so wet!

Terry Fox Run/Walk – Thursday, September 26th

The students and staff of Our Lady of Grace participated in the Terry Fox run/walk on Thursday, September 26th, 2019 at 1 pm.  The school’s goal was to raise $600.00 and we raised $ 500.00!  Fantastic work Gators, we are the “Mighty Little School” with a BIG HEART! Thank you for supporting this worthwhile cause!

FOOD DRIVE IS GOING STRONG – LETS BURY THE GATOR!

Our Thanksgiving Food Drive is going strong and our WE TEAM is helping lead the charge. Mrs. Weinstein’s Class is out in front and all classrooms have donated many wonderful food items to help us collectively “bury our Gator!” (our GOAL). It will continue again this week and run through to Thanksgiving. Please consider giving generously to support this worthwhile initiative and remember to have a conversation with your child(ren) about all of the blessings in their lives. We are truly blessed and these food donations go a long way to help our SVDP Food Bank at Blessed Sacrament Church. Again, thanks for your kindness, compassion and generosity!

Important Bulletin – re Planned CUPE Strike

Dear Parent or Guardian,

On Wednesday September 25th, 2019, we received word that CUPE would be initiating a “work to rule” campaign in all of our schools and work places on Monday September 30th, 2019.  We are writing today to provide an update on the CUPE strike action which is currently taking place in our schools.

At WCDSB, CUPE represents the following working groups:  Administrative Assistants, Early Childhood Educators, Educational Assistants, Personal Support Works, Child and Youth Workers, Lunch Hour Supervisors, Library Technicians, Communicative Disorder Assistants, Payroll and Accounting Associates and Computer Technicians.  In each case CUPE had informed us of “struck work”, which are duties that might otherwise be performed by these individuals, which is no longer occurring.

In all cases, our school safety and a Christ-centred learning environment remains of paramount importance to us, and our administrators are working diligently to ensure that we are compensating as best we can for the duties not being performed.  Having said that, it is important for all to acknowledge that it is not “business as usual” across the board, and in some cases compromises have been required, until we are through the job action.

This morning we received notice that a full CUPE strike may commence on Monday October 7th, if an agreement is not reached this weekend.  If the strike proceeds, this will mean CUPE members will not report to work.  As CUPE represents 1100 of our school based staff, we would not be able to safely operate our schools.  Therefore, IF the strike proceeds, we will be proceeding to closing our schools commencing Monday October 7th, 2019.

The declaration of and continuation of the strike is a result of central (provincial-level) negotiations and decisions that will be made at that level.  At WCDSB we do not currently control the decisions regarding the strike or its remedy.  Since there is a possibility that schools may be closed for an indefinite period of time, we recommend that you immediately begin making alternate plans for the care of your children, in the event that the strike proceeds.

We hope you find this update helpful.  Please note that updates are regularly being posted to our website www.wcdsb.ca and there is a Frequently Asked Questions section there as well, which may prove helpful.  In the meanwhile, we offer our prayers that CUPE and the government are able to reach a fast, fair and respectful collective agreement.

Sincerely yours,

Loretta Notten — Director of Education
