Important Reminder – All WCDSB Schools Closed on Tuesday, February 4, 2020

Our Lady of Grace Catholic School and ALL WCDSB Schools will be Closed tomorrow – Tuesday, February 4, 2020

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA) has announced that all of its members will be engaging in a one-day strike on Tuesday, February 4. This decision affects all Catholic district school boards in Ontario.

As a result of this strike, all Waterloo Catholic District School Board elementary and secondary schools will be closed on February 4.

All WCDSB Extended Day Programs will be OPEN for the day as usual (7 a.m. to 6 p.m.) for students currently registered in the program.

Secondary school credit courses, hair styling courses and culinary arts courses offered at the WCDSB’s St. Louis Adult Learning & Continuing Education Centres campuses will be cancelled on February 4. St. Louis guidance and correspondence services will also be unavailable on February 4. All other St. Louis programs will be open and running on their normal schedules.

Community use of schools activities will continue as scheduled.

OECTA’s previously announced administrative job actions will remain in effect before and after February 4.

As before, we remain hopeful the two sides will return to the bargaining table quickly and will come to a fair and respectful agreement that serves the best interests of our students.

Wear BLUE Tomorrow – BELL Lets Talk Day Jan. 29th – Let’s Join the Conversation Gators!

Alright Gators, Lets Join the Conversation!

Bell Let’s Talk Day is January 29 and we at Our Lady of Grace Catholic School are wearing BLUE and joining the conversation to help continue the momentum toward positive change.

Mental illness affects people of all ages and from all walks of life. According to the Mental Health Commission of Canada, one in five people in Canada will experience a mental health issue or illness in any given year. Over the past 9 years, Canadians and people around the globe have joined in the world’s largest conversation around mental health on Bell Let’s Talk Day. Together we have taken big steps to reduce the stigma around mental health issues.

In a recent survey conducted by Nielsen Consumer Insights in 2019, 84% of Canadians now say they are comfortable speaking with others about mental health, compared to only 42% in 2012.

However, there is still work to be done to ensure all Canadians have access to the mental health support they need. This year, on Bell Let’s Talk Day Canadians are encouraged to share the actions, large and small, that they are taking to improve the lives of people living with mental health issues.

That’s why we’re joining in on the 10th annual Bell Let’s Talk Day to help create positive change. Our students will take some time tomorrow to touch on strategies to deal with mental health in an age appropriate way. In addition, teachers will have access to slideshows and lessons that they can use in their class. We are also encouraging all students and staff to wear BLUE on Wednesday, January 29th to show our support.

When it comes to mental health, every action counts!

On Bell Let’s Talk Day, for every text, mobile and long distance call made on the Bell network, tweet using #BellLetsTalk, social media video view, or use of the Facebook frame or Snapchat filter, Bell will contribute 5 cents more to Canadian mental health programs.

You can also learn more about some of the organizations providing meaningful mental health supports and services throughout Canada and download the Bell Let’s Talk toolkit to begin your own conversation about mental health at home.

Let’s all continue to work together to improve the lives of Canadians living with mental health issues and help create positive change. Way to go Gators!

Ministry of Health Update

Hi Gator Families,

You may have read information regarding the Coronavirus that has reached Ontario. The health care team in the province is well-prepared and has highly effective protocols in place.

To learn more about the virus and the containment plan, you can visit the link below and read the letter released by the Ministry of Health to our school communities.

Wuhan novel coronavirus Memo – CMoH Jan 27EN

https://www.ontario.ca/page/wuhan-novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov

It is also wise that we redouble our own efforts to limit the spread of any type of illness in our schools by continuing the regular practice of:
  • good hygiene – washing hands thoroughly and with soap or sanitizer;
  • covering one’s mouth and nose when one sneezes or coughs;
  • staff and students stay home when ill.
  • It is also wise to get a yearly flu vaccine, available from clinics or pharmacies.
Thanks for your continued support in maintaining the health and wellness of our school population!

Possible OECTA Job Action

As part of the ongoing central bargaining process involving the Ontario government and education workers across the province, the association representing our teachers – the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA) – has indicated that if a collective agreement isn’t reached today or over the weekend, that starting Monday, January 13, 2020 teachers will no longer be performing a variety of administrative duties.

A list of specific duties being withdrawn can be found at:

http://www.catholicteachers.ca/OECTA/media/pdfs/News/2020/jan/NR_2019-018.pdf

This withdrawal of services will not impact the safety of our school and, with the exception of preparation for EQAO testing, direct services provided to our students will be unaffected.

Co-curricular activities (clubs, field trips, special events, etc.) will not be impacted by this withdrawal of services at this time.

We do remain hopeful the two sides can come to a fair and respectful agreement that serves the best interests of our students.
