This reminded us of our schools commitment toward developing resilience as we continue to participate in The Umbrella Project that got started this year … We are mindful that we can develop resilience by working on a number of important life skills that make our “Personal Umbrellas” quite strong!

Umbrella Project pic

A new umbrella skill is outlined each month and the Umbrella Skill for the month of May is “OPTIMISM.” We are learning that being optimistic is a choice and is a skill we can develop and work on … rain falls in all of our lives at times, and just like Covid-19, our Gator Community can remain both RESILIENT and OPTIMISTIC! To show it, our Gator Staff Team took the time to be optimistic, to count our blessings (our relationships with our Gator Students and each other) and to be truly HAPPY! It inspired us to just, DANCE!

Accept the “Happy Dance Challenge!”

Alright Gators, your turn to show your OPTIMISM and HAPPY VIBE … show us your “Happy Dance!” Simply take a video of you breaking out a few fun dance moves and send it to your teacher through your WCDSB Google Classroom or D2L … Way to go Gators! Cant wait to see your Happy Dance!

REMINDER: OLOG Introducing School Messenger Communicate

The Waterloo Catholic District School Board is about to launch a new automated broadcast system that will improve communication between home and school. The system uses telephone and email to notify parents and staff of important events and emergency school information. The system we are using is called School Messenger Communicate, it will be used to augment and not replace other communication methods currently in place (such as our school newsletters).

Over the course of the school year, we will be calling using this new automated system to keep you informed about significant events at Our Lady of Grace in a timely manner. This system can also be used to inform parents about important school events, dates, information items and any emergency situations that may occur.

Please rest assured that your personal information and contact numbers will be strictly secure and you will not receive any unauthorized messages.

If you have caller ID, it will display WCDSB or the school’s phone number.

Have You Found Your HAPPY PLACE?

Our Gator Staff is OPTIMISTIC – Taking time to be HAPPY and develop our Umbrella Skill for May – OPTIMISM, Staying Positive and Choosing to be Happy!

Umbrella Project pic

This month we are taking on a skill that will help us look on the bright side, even when winter oversteps its seasonal timelines. That skill is “Realistic Optimism” and we can sure use lots of OPTIMISM in the world right now!

How will realistic optimism help my child? We often hear sayings about looking on the bright side of life. Turns out that looking on the bright side can actually improve your child’s mental and physical health. Mix that with helping them have a realistic look at the obstacles they may face, and you have a strategy for success.

Our Staff Team is super Optimistic and we miss our Gator Students BIG TIME!

And when we meet each week and think of them, we smile and are truly HAPPY knowing that one day soon, we will be together!

Some positive and Happy Energy is coming your way very soon! Stay tuned! And BE HAPPY!

OUR HEROES WEAR SCRUBS! Today is International Nurses Day – May 12th – THANKS!

Today is International Nurses Day and this day happens on May 12th each year to celebrate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale.

The OLOG Gators want to Salute our Nurses Today and every day because we know OUR HEROES WEAR SCRUBS & MASKS! We want to extend our heartfelt thanks for their COURAGE, COMPASSION and DEDICATION – THANKS!

History of International Nurse’s Day

Florence Nightingale was the first person to turn the nursing profession into an organised sector with standardised roles and responsibilities.  In 1854, she brought 38 volunteer nurses to care for soldiers during the Crimean War. Prior to that, both male and female nurses were usually untrained family members of soldiers who tended to the ill and the wounded.

Nightingale is credited with founding the modern professional nursing, being instrumental in improving sanitation, hygiene and nutrition of the ill.

The day was first proposed by an officer with the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Dorothy Sutherland in the year 1953 and subsequently proclaimed by the then president Dwight D Eisenhower. International Nurse’s Day was first celebrated by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) in the year 1965.

In the UK, a service is held in London’s Westminster Abbey in honour of nurses and healthcare workers. A symbolic lamp is taken from the Nurses’ Chapel and handed from one nurse to another.

This year’s International Nurses Day is special because it marks the 200th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale.

The World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted that nurses are at the forefront of fighting epidemics and pandemics, stating that the COVID-19 is a reminder of the important role nurses play!

Happy Mother’s Day 2020!

Happy Mothers Day

To ALL MOTHERS on this very special day: our Gator student’s moms, school volunteers, school council, our staff who are mothers and to all Grandmothers and Great Grandmothers in our School Community, this poem and prayer is for you … We want to extend our heartfelt thanks for the tremendous LOVE and GRACE you share to make the Our Lady of Grace Catholic School Community, the special place that it is, for our children and for all who visit – THANKS!

We truly treasure the GIFT of  MOMS and Catholic Education and it is fitting on this special day and throughout the month of MAY, that we take time to remember the tremendous love of MARY, our school’s namesake, who answered God’s call and purpose for her life, to be such a loving MOTHER to JESUS, she truly was and is, OUR LADY OF GRACE!

Mother’s Day Prayer ….

A MOTHER’S LOVE

THERE ARE TIMES WHEN ONLY A MOTHER’S LOVE
CAN UNDERSTAND OUR TEARS,
CAN SOOTHE OUR DISAPPOINTS
AND CALM ALL OF OUR FEARS.
THERE ARE TIMES WHEN ONLY A MOTHER’S LOVE
CAN SHARE THE JOY WE FEEL
WHEN SOMETHING WE’VE DREAMED ABOUT
QUITE SUDDENLY IS REAL.
THERE ARE TIMES WHEN ONLY A MOTHER’S FAITH
CAN HELP US ON LIFE’S WAY
AND INSPIRE IN US THE CONFIDENCE
WE NEED FROM DAY TO DAY.
FOR A MOTHER’S HEART AND A MOTHER’S FAITH
AND A MOTHER’S STEADFAST LOVE
WERE FASHIONED BY THE ANGELS
AND SENT FROM GOD ABOVE.

AMEN

… AND WAIT JUST ONE MINUTE MOMS … there is a SPECIAL GIFT for you today so please click on the link as you enjoy this very special day …

Mix that with helping them have a realistic look at the obstacles they may face, and you have a strategy for success. Achieving goals can be challenging and a negative outlook can defeat children before they even get started. Learning to be realistically optimistic will help your child link their dreams to the steps they will need to take to achieve them and help them take on life with a positive attitude.

Please check out this link for more great ideas and resources …

Optimism-Parent-Newsletter.docx-1-1

We are grateful to partner with The Umbrella Project in an effort to teach our Gators not only Optimism, but as well a number of life skills that can be learned, developed and practices for all in our community, such that we have a strong umbrella when moments of rain arise in our life (the Covid-19 Pandemic is just one example). And, when this happens, we are prepared (our internal umbrella is strong), and get through it more readily, knowing that we can count on our strength, God’s strength and that the sun will shine again very soon!

Our Gators are Connected and ON-LINE with their Teachers … And we will get through this together!

Week #6 of Phase 2, Teacher-led Learning at Home – We are here for you!

Our kindergartens were given the challenge to make a lighthouse and then reflect on how they can be a lighthouse of HOPE for others – great!

One of our wonderful Primary students showed his thinking by using a number line to do subtraction – very cool!

Our students celebrated Catholic Education Week by sharing HOPE and our FAITH in many creative ways – super talented Gators!

We Asked, You Answered! Thanks for Your ThoughtExchange Feedback!!

On Tuesday, April 14, 2020 we asked our #WCDSBAwesome community this very important question:

WCDSBLearn@Home – How Are We Doing…?

And the response was extraordinary!

The tool we used is called ThoughtExchange. Here’s how it worked:

1. Specifically, respondents were asked to answer the question:

As you consider Waterloo Catholic’s response toward learning at home, what questions or concerns do you have?

2. Once respondents shared their thoughts, they had the opportunity to read the thoughts of others and assign *STARS* based on how much they agreed (5 *STARS*) or disagreed (1 *STAR*). This rating system allowed the school board to identify the key areas of success, while also flagging the areas of greatest concern

Between April 14 and April 21, 2020 a total of 1,925 respondents provided 1,635 thoughts – which generated 36,941 *STAR* ratings.

So, what did we learn?

At the highest level – it is clear that our community values the work our teachers and system have done.  There were a number of comments acknowledging the efforts of teachers to connect and to ensure the well being and engagement of students.

There were three key points of further feedback.

First, the need for connection remains high.  There is a desire for engagement between educator and family, between students and their peers, as well as a desire to have some “live” engagement.

Secondly, there is a concern about issues connected to equity – which invites us to be very thoughtful in providing choice and multiple entry points for students.

Finally, there were many comments related to learning tasks — with a desire for consistent expectations and routine as educators engage their students.
