Measles Update – Region of Waterloo Public Health

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

Re: Measles Update

Measles is a highly contagious and potentially serious viral infection. There have been recent measles cases in several Ontario jurisdictions and large outbreaks in Europe, the United States and elsewhere. Most cases of measles have been linked to travel outside of Ontario.

Measles can cause serious illness and death. Infants under one year of age, unimmunized pregnant individuals and people with weakened immune systems are at increased risk of complications.

Measles symptoms begin 7 to 21 days after infection and may include high fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes (pink eye) and a red rash lasting 4 to 7 days.

What can I do to protect myself and my family?

  1. Ensure you are up to date with measles vaccination, especially ahead of international travel.

Individuals without an immunization record of their measles vaccines may need to repeat vaccination – it is not harmful to receive an additional dose(s).

Children

  • Children receive two doses of measles vaccine as part of routine vaccination, one dose at 12 months of age and a second dose between 4-6 years old
    • Infants between 6-11 months may receive a dose of measles vaccine if travelling (Note: Two additional doses of measles vaccine must still be administered after 12 months of age to ensure long-lasting immunity)
    • Children under 4 years of age who have received one dose of measles vaccine on or after 12 months of age, may receive a second dose of measles vaccine if travelling (Note: there must be 4 weeks separating doses of measles vaccine)

Adults

  • Adults born prior to 1970 are generally considered immune to measles
    • A dose of measles vaccine is recommended for those travelling
  • Adults born in or after 1970 may have received 1 or 2 doses of measles vaccine. If one dose has been received, a second is recommended for:
    • Travellers
    • Healthcare workers
    • Post-secondary students

It is important that parents/guardians report their child’s vaccinations to Public Health. Health care providers do not report these vaccinations to Public Health. Visit regionofwaterloo.ca/vaccines to report your child’s vaccinations.

  1. Monitor for signs and symptoms of measles.

Monitor yourself and your family for signs and symptoms of measles, especially after you return from international travel. If you develop symptoms:

  • Limit your contact with other people
  • Call your health care provider or a walk-in clinic and notify them about your symptoms before an in-person appointment so that they can take precautions to prevent others from getting sick
  • Wear a medical mask when seeking care

For more information about measles, please visit regionofwaterloo.ca/measles

Gator Gazette – Week at at Glance – Week #27 – March 25-29, 2024

Gators

Below are some wonderful learning moments and FUN at OLOG followed by some key important information items and then a brief snapshot of our Week ahead …

Holy Week is this Week as we get ready for the JOY of EASTER!

Lent 2024 Continues … and today is Palm Sunday, also called Passion Sunday, and for Catholics, this is the first day of the Holy Week. Palm branches signify goodness and victory and are placed before Jesus’ path as he entered Jerusalem. This week at Our Lady of Grace, we will honour Holy Week.

We will continue to explore the Passion Story and Jesus’ Way of the Cross, using our Resurrection Eggs to reflect on our calling of who we are called to be to make the world the best it can be. This truly is a solemn and focused week and each classroom will engage in activities as part of our religious instruction and deepen our understanding of Lent and Holy Week. We will also hold a Passion Liturgy on Thursday to pray and reflect on the true meaning of Easter – Resurrection and New Life.

At Easter we focus on the Triduum. What is the Holy Triduum?

The Triduum is the three days commemorating the crucifixion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Holy Thursday is the day of the last supper, and it was also the First Holy Communion, as it was the first time Jesus turned bread and wine into his Body and Blood.

Good Friday is when we remember the crucifixion and death of Jesus. The day sounds bad, but it is called good because we remember that Jesus loved us so much that he was willing to die for us.

Holy Saturday is a vigil day, a day of waiting and watching for something to happen. It is the day before Easter when Jesus lay in the tomb.

*** Important Reminder *** There is NO SCHOOL on Good Friday (March 29th) or Easter Monday (April 1st).

OLOG Easter Food Drive Continues – Ends This Week on Holy Thursday, March 28th – Thanks!

OLOG is the little school with the BIG Heart and we are looking for your HELP.

We are working closely with the Food Bank of Waterloo Region as the need is great right now and they were so very grateful for our help at Christmas too!

Please consider sending in some non-perishable food items as this will be the final week. We already have 8 boxes of food (GREAT!) and hope to keep helping during this special HOLY WEEK time of Faith and Helping Others.

Again, thanks for your kindness and generosity Gator Nation!

Public Health Vaccinations – ISPA – Immunization Suspension Pupils Act – March 27th

We are now at the point at which students who do not have their immunizations up to date will be suspended from school; this is not something that anyone wants and several communications have been sent home to parents throughout our school board and OLOG School. For those Gator Parents who have been contacted, please continue to share the necessary paperwork with Public Health to ensure that student records and vaccinations are up to date by March 27th.

Updating Information Reminder – Please do not send confirmation of your immunization information to the school – it must be shared and confirmed with Public Health. As we approach March 27th, they will continue to let the school know which students are not up to date and at that point, we will send home suspension letters on Public Health’s behalf.

Each School will get an updated list on Tuesday, March 26th and thankfully, most of the students will have been removed as parents do what they can to update Public Health … BUT if your child’s name is still on that list come Tuesday, they will need to REMAIN HOME FROM SCHOOL, on Wednesday, March 27th and going forward – until their name is removed from that list.

Again, thanks for your attention to this important matter!

Public Health Vaccinations Update

We are now under one month away from the point at which students who do not have their immunizations up to date will be suspended from school; this is not something that anyone wants. We hope that you can share the necessary paperwork with Public Health to ensure that student records and vaccinations are up to date by March 27th.

As we approach March 27th, they will continue to let the school know which students are not up to date and at that point, we will send home suspension letters on Public Health’s behalf.

Lent 2024 – A Time for Renewed Prayer, Fasting/Abstinence, and Almsgiving

The season of Lent is a high point in the Catholic calendar. It is an opportunity for “spiritual self-improvement” as we look towards living Lent with mercy. Lent focuses on an increased emphasis on prayer, fasting and almsgiving. During the season of Lent, a wonderful preparation period for the joy of Easter and the Resurrection. It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday. We look forward to the experience of opening our hearts to those living on the outermost fringes of society: fringes that modern society itself creates. During Lent, we are called to open our eyes and see the misery of the world and the wounds of our brothers and sisters who are denied their dignity.   Let us recognize that we are compelled to reach out and support them, so they can feel the warmth of our compassion.

OLOG Easter Food Drive – Lent 2024 – Runs From March 18-28th – Thanks for Giving!

OLOG is the little school with the BIG Heart and we are looking for your HELP.

We are working closely with the Food Bank of Waterloo Region as the need is great right now and they were so very grateful for our help at Christmas too!

Please consider sending in some non-perishable food items and we will gather them over the next 2 weeks and get them delivered to the Food Bank on Holy Thursday.

Thanks Gators!

Lost and Found Pick-up – March 4-7th

Gator Parents and Students,

Our school’s lost and found collection has accumulated a significant number of items over the past few months!

To ensure that lost belongings are reunited with their rightful owners, we have set all the items out on tables in the hallway for students over the next week.

We kindly ask students to view the lost and found items and have your child pick them up by March 7th.

To support you in assisting your child with this we are sharing photos as well below of the items that are displayed in our foyer near the gym.

Any unclaimed items after will be donated to local charities.

Thanks!

Gator Gazette – Week at a Glance – Week #25 – March 4-8, 2024

Gators

Below are some wonderful learning moments and FUN at OLOG from this past week – followed by some key important information items and then a brief snapshot of our Week ahead …

Updating Information Reminder – Please do not send confirmation of your immunization information to the school – it must be shared and confirmed with Public Health. As we approach March 27th, they will continue to let the school know which students are not up to date and at that point, we will send home suspension letters on Public Health’s behalf.

A Shout Out To Our Awesome OLOG Lunch Hour Supervisors – Thanks for ALL You Do Today and Everyday!

Happy Friday afternoon Gator Families,

The staff and students at Our Lady of Grace School would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all of our Lunch Hour Supervisors!

They are outside in the rain and the cold, they cover our classes for us, they support us in classrooms when we are short, but MOST importantly, they build relationships with our entire school community!

Our schools would not be the same without you and we are so thankful for you today, on Lunch Hour Supervisor Appreciation Day, but as well, everyday!

You are truly superheroes and we want to say THANK YOU!

Mrs. McClennan, Mrs. Ortiz and Ms. Sisi, YOU ARE THE BEST!
